Rain With a View

This is what you see from the Snowdon Mountain Railway. It has been running since 1896.

Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales--3,560 feet. The train doesn't reach the summit in wintertime, but it does stop at Clogwyn station 3/4 of the way up. It cost £21.

Unless you are visiting Snowdonia in the summer (or are inordinately laden with £££), skip the train. The view at Clogwyn was cloaked in cloud, and when we got out for pictures, the cold slapped us in the face with a compliment of sleet.

On the sunny side, we saw sheep and cows, a waterfall, and teeny tiny houses far below, and we met a friendly Canadian couple who used to ski and snowshoe in the Rockies and are now vacationing in the UK.

While we waited for the return journey, the four of us jumped munched on Kendall mint cake, a sweet, non-chocolate bar known for making it to the top of Everest in 7 days.

  2. Hi Erika! It was great to meet you at Bangor train station! I hope the rest of your journey was good and that in your continuing travels around the UK (especially Scotland, you'll love it) you discover lots great places and people. P.S. Sorry I never found you on the train to say goodbye but we fell asleep and only woke 2 minutes before our station appeared! Phil

    1. Hi, Phil! Yay--thanks for finding my blog. Meeting people is so fun, and talking made the time zoom away; it was the highlight of my day in Bangor.
I'm getting to know Edinburgh a bit. So much history behind every pub and spire (and even in the paving stones!), lots of good free stuff to do. My favorite things so far are the sea and city views from Calton Hill and Arthur's seat. Have you been to either/both?
I still love North Wales better.

I looked for you guys too. Good thing you woke up in time! Are you back to work? I think your friend said you took the Monday off as well for holiday.

    2. Hi Erika, sorry I haven't replied in a while. That was your highlight in Bangor, says a lot about Bangor ;-) lol Yes I took the Monday off, needed it. After cycling and the climb I needed the rest, but not before I spent a day in Liverpool and the evening in London before heading back to Bristol.

Glad you enjoyed Edinburgh! I've been to Calton Hill but missed out on Arthur's seat, what's the view from the top like? Did you also climb up on the National Monument and grab a photo there on Calton Hill? (everyone was doing that when I was there)

Btw, I was over way Swansea a couple of weekends ago to visit the pembrey country park. Have you been? Miles of sandy beach and forest behind, awesome stuff

    3. Hi Phil,
Yes, I am sure you needed the rest. I was just talking to someone the other day about you guys's cycling/climbing weekend, and they thought it was crazy.

The view from the top of Arthur's Seat is amazing. You can see all Edinburgh spread out below you, and the sea, too! My friend and I did go on top of Calton Hill--we took a picnic and sat in the sun. I didn't go up the Monument--have you?

Pembrey Country Park, I hadn't heard of that. It sounds nice! Did you enjoy?

  3. No I didn't go up the monument. I went in the middle of winter so was bitterly cold... I got quite grumpy in the cold and didn't want to climb it lol

Ya it was great over at Pembrey, if I'm ever going over that way again with my friends from Bristol I'll give you a shout and see if your interested in coming along.

On that note, how long are you still in the UK for now? If you want to keep in touch, drop me an email rather than commenting on here all the time. My address is philostler [at] gmail [dot] com.

    Take care!
